Saab 99 Valve Cover Gasket Replacement
Did you know that the 99 uses a cork valve cover gasket? Instead of rubber, these older valve covers use cork! You can still find them new, and they're readily available from most large auto part distributors. I bought mine from Maptun, but they're also available on sites like RockAuto.
Here is the outlined process. If you've done a valve cover job before, this is very straightforward and simple. But if you're on your first go, I hope this is a helpful guide.
1. Start by moving your spark plug wire over to the right side of the engine. You don't have to remove them.
2. Disconnect the pulse air vacuum line. (The disconnected line above the valvetrain that looks like a "Y").
3. Remove the valve cover. There should be 8 retaining screws.
4. Gently remove the old gasket, using a flathead screwdriver to pry it off.
5. Remove the excess sealer from the previous gasket. Ensure the cover is smooth for the new gasket and sealer to be applied. In the meantime, wipe any leaked/excess motor oil off the valve cover.
6. Apply sealer around the cover perimeter. Then apply the new gasket. Make sure it lines up with the retaining screw holes.
7. Reinstall the valve cover. When tightening, do not over tighten the screws!
8. Reconnect the pulse air line, and move your spark plug wires back into place. Complete!
