1970 Saab Sonett III V4: What's Left

The Sonett is easily overlooked in Saab’s classic lineup from the 1960s and ‘70s. That’s because it really wasn’t like anything they had put out prior and after its launch.

Unlike the 96 or the 99, the Sonett was solely a sports car at heart. This was something Saab tried to promote as best they could, but unfortunately the Sonett never caught on in the sports car market like they hoped.

The Sonett’s Achilles heel was its underpowered engine, originally using the infamous Saab two stroke 3 cylinder in the 1960s, before switching to the Ford sourced Taunus V4. Though this engine was more easier to drive and touted a bit more power than the two stroke 3, it wasn’t enough to get the Sonett into the limelight. Saab ended production in 1974, eight years after production started in 1966.

This Sonett was found at Conntech Saab in Warwick, RI. It's a parts car, but it could have potential to be restored if it makes its way to the right hands.

This Sonett III is able to be distinguished from the II due to its tail light design, which it also shares with the 99, which continued to use this part until 1976.
