Replacing the Preheater Hose
This is probably the strangest component in the 99's engine bay, outside of the reverse mounted engine and water pump replacement. The preheater hose is a piece of aluminum ducting that connects from the exhaust manifold to the intake. It's function is to help the engine reach normal operating temperature upon warm up, using recycled heat from the engine before it exits the car through the exhaust. This is a really great idea, until you realize that it's all possible thanks to an awkward piece of ducting. Who am I to judge the Swedes though. They know better than me!
Fortunately, they still manufacture this preheater ducting. I found mine over the counter at my local Napa shop. I used two pieces of ducting to complete the job, connecting both in the middle. One piece is not long enough to reach both points.
Here's the procedure:
- Locate each duct entry port. One is found on the air intake and the other is on the righthand side of the exhaust manifold, right below the spark plugs.
- Carefully stretch the ducting, making sure not to crease or crinkle the part.
- Install the ducting, while shaping it to fit to the other side.
- Do the same for the other side; You may need to cut one piece in order to get it to fit properly with the other.
- Use a hose clamp to tighten the intake side down while not over tightening, and ensure the exhaust side is snug in its housing.
- Once you're done, it should look like the image below.
